Important: This Is Not a Raffle
Day One Prizes does not operate as a raffle or lottery. We fully comply with UK regulations to ensure our monthly prize draws are legally classified as free draws or prize competitions under the Gambling Act 2005.
Here’s how we ensure this:
- Skill-Based Entry: Each entrant must answer a skill-based question correctly before they can enter the prize draw. This removes the element of pure chance required for a raffle.
- Free Entry Route: A no-purchase, postal entry option is always available. This ensures the draw is not exclusively dependent on payment, which is another legal requirement to avoid classification as a lottery or raffle.
- Transparency: The winner is chosen randomly from only the correct entries. The draw is recorded and can be made available to entrants upon request.
- Judged Entry Process: In addition to a multiple-choice skill question, entrants may be asked a judgement-based follow-up (e.g. a tiebreaker or answer review) to further meet legal standards for a prize competition.
These measures are in place to ensure Day One Prizes remains compliant, fair, and open to everyone who wishes to participate. If you have any questions about how our competitions work, please contact us at info@dayoneprizes.com.
1. Overview
Day One Prizes operates a monthly prize draw open to UK residents. Each draw begins on the 1st of each calendar month at 00:01 (UK time) and closes on the final calendar day of that month at 23:59. A new prize and question are announced at the beginning of each month. The winner is drawn on the 1st of the following month.
2. Eligibility
Entry is open to all UK residents aged 18 or over. Entrants aged 16 or 17 may participate only with verifiable parental or guardian consent and must have an adult supervise and complete payment on their behalf.
Employees of Day One Prizes or anyone connected with the draw are not eligible to enter.
3. How to Enter
A. Online Entry (Paid)
- Participants must correctly answer a skill‑based question to qualify.
- The question is multiple choice and changes monthly.
- Each person may attempt the question once every 24 hours.
- If the question is answered correctly, the entrant may purchase one or more entries at a cost of £3 per entry.
- Payments are handled securely via Stripe. Day One Prizes absorbs any associated transaction fees.
- Email addresses are used to verify eligibility and manage the 24‑hour limit.
B. Postal Entry (Free)
- Entrants may enter the same draw by sending their full name, email address, and answer to the current month's question via post.
- Only one postal entry per person per draw is permitted.
- Postal entries should be sent to the promoter's address above.
- Entries must be received before the draw closes.
4. Prize Information
- The prize will be announced on the 1st of each month on the website.
- The first prize is a Brilliant Stars 154/172 Charizard V Pokémon Card.
- Prizes vary each month and may differ in value.
- No cash alternatives are offered unless stated.
5. Winner Selection
- All correct entries (online and postal) are compiled into a single list.
- A random number generator will select the winner.
- The draw will be recorded for transparency and made available to entrants upon request.
6. Winner Notification & Delivery
- Winners will be notified by email.
- Prizes may be collected in person (if local) or posted. Day One Prizes covers delivery costs.
7. Publicity
Winners will be asked for consent to publish their first name and photograph for promotional use. This is optional and not a condition of winning.
8. General
- By entering, participants agree to these terms and any additional rules published on the Day One Prizes website.
- The promoter reserves the right to cancel or amend a draw where necessary.
- Day One Prizes reserves the right to cancel the draw under any circumstances. In such cases, a full refund will be issued to all paid entrants.
- Refunds are not available for any other reason once an entry has been submitted and payment has been processed.
9. Skill Threshold and Judged Tie-Breaker
To ensure the competition remains skill-based in line with UK Gambling Commission guidance, all participants must correctly answer a knowledge-based question to qualify for entry. If, however, the proportion of incorrect answers falls below 50% (i.e. more than half of all participants answer the question correctly), a secondary judged question will be used to determine the winner. This question will assess the entrant’s creativity and relevance to the theme (e.g., "If you were a Pokémon, which would you be and why?"), and the winning entry will be selected based on merit by a panel of judges. This process ensures compliance with applicable regulations and preserves the integrity of the prize draw.
10. Entry Limits
To ensure fairness and compliance with UK prize‑competition regulations, each participant may register up to five (5) successful entries per monthly draw—that is, entries in which the qualifying skill‑based question has been answered correctly.
-
Online entries: You may attempt the question once every 24 hours. An incorrect attempt does not count toward the five‑entry cap, but you must wait the full 24‑hour interval before trying again. Online entrants receive immediate on‑screen confirmation of whether their answer is correct or incorrect.
-
Free postal entries: You may also submit up to five correct entries per draw by post, with each entry sent separately in its own stamped envelope. Postal entries are processed daily, and you will be notified by email once your answer has been logged and validated (usually within two working days). Incorrect postal answers do not count toward the five‑entry limit.
These measures ensure equal opportunity across both paid and free routes while preventing rapid‑fire guessing and maintaining the integrity of the competition.
